Greece Becomes the First Country to Watch Its Entire Territory for Wildfires From Space

Most wildfires are easiest to stop in their first few minutes, while they are still small enough for a single crew to handle. The trouble is finding them that early. A blaze that ignites deep in a national park or on a bare slope can burn unseen for hours, with no one close enough to notice, until it is far past the size anyone can contain. Greece has spent this spring building a system aimed squarely at that gap.

The country has become the first in the world to operate a national satellite system dedicated solely to spotting and tracking wildfires, with coverage across 100 percent of its territory. Called the Hellenic Fire System, it is a constellation of four satellites built for one job, and its sensors are sharp enough to notice a hotspot as small as four meters by four meters, roughly the footprint of a single parking space, then pass that alert to fire crews within minutes.

That resolution is what sets the system apart. The weather and imaging satellites already overhead were built for other jobs, and catching a fire in its first minutes, while it is still tiny, falls outside what they can do. The blazes that end up doing the most damage tend to start where no one is watching: a remote ridge, an empty stretch of forest, a corner of a park far from any road. Thermal cameras trained on the heat of a fresh fire reach into those blind spots.

The four satellites went up in May on a SpaceX rocket. The system was built by the space-data company OroraTech alongside three partners: Greece’s Ministry of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence, the Hellenic Space Center, and the European Space Agency. It was funded through the country’s national recovery plan, Greece 2.0, which draws on the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility, and carried out under an ESA contract. The detections flow directly to Greek fire services as public infrastructure.

The timing follows a hard stretch for the region. Greece and its neighbors around the Mediterranean came through a punishing 2025 wildfire season, and seasons across the area keep running longer, hotter and drier, leaving more of the calendar open to fire and more of it starting in places no one is watching.

“Today marks a major step forward in strengthening Greece’s national resilience against wildfires,” said Dimitris Papastergiou, the country’s Minister of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence. “By integrating space-based capabilities into our emergency response systems, we are equipping our fire services with the tools they need to respond faster, act more effectively, and protect lives, property, and the environment.”

For OroraTech, the project is a proof of concept it hopes other governments will copy. “For the first time, an entire country is protected by a dedicated satellite constellation built to detect and track wildfires in real time,” said Martin Langer, the company’s chief executive, in the official announcement. “This is the blueprint for how nations can use space technology to safeguard their people, ecosystems, and economies.”

Whether that blueprint spreads will depend on what the data does on the ground. None of this fights the fire itself; that still falls to the crews. What the Hellenic Fire System changes is how soon those crews learn a fire exists at all, and getting word while a blaze is still small is often the difference between a quick containment and a lost hillside. For the first time, Greece can get that word from orbit.
